Book Review: “The Iron Trial”

* * * B

The Iron Trial is a fantasy the-iron-trialnovel by Holly Black and Cassandra Claire (author of the excellent “City of Bones”). The Iron Trial is targeted at young adults, and is a very easy read, taking me just over a day. The quality of the writing is good. Most of the book is very reminiscent of the Harry Potter novels, though without the depth of world building that Rowling brought to those, so until the very end, I was thinking that I’d be giving Iron Trial two stars at best. But then, in the words of M. Night Shamalan, “what a twist!” It’s a doozy, and the payoff that makes it worth the read. I’m interested to see where they’ll go with this in the next installment.
