Do Porn Stars Deserve Respect?

respectThe media is upset as Giuliani slams Stormy Daniels: “I don’t respect a porn star the way I respect a career woman”. Is he wrong to say this?

[Giuliani] went on to swipe at Daniels’s work in pornography and emphasize that he doesn’t “respect a porn star” the same way he respects a “career woman.”

Should we respect a porn star the same way we respect a career woman? I’d say that entirely depends on the career. First of all, is being a porn star immoral? Using the non-aggression principle as a guide, I’d have to say no. Being a porn star does not, of itself, lead to aggressive actions against others. Therefore, any difference in how much you respect porn stars versus career women is a matter of preference, whereas I don’t think the same could be said of a woman who was a murderer or a thief.

Next, are all moral occupations equally worthy of respect? I hope you will agree that they clearly aren’t. For example, a woman who works for a telemarketing company that bilks seniors out of money is less worthy of respect than a woman working to cure cancer. Personally, I respect porn stars more than I respect people who defraud the elderly.

“I respect all human beings. I have to respect criminals,” he said.

What? I don’t respect all human beings. I don’t respect murderers. I don’t respect thieves. I don’t respect those who bear false witness.

“I’m sorry, I don’t respect a porn star the way I respect a career woman or a woman of substance or a woman who has great respect for herself as a woman and as a person and isn’t going to sell her body for sexual exploitation.”

What Giuliani means by “career woman” is unclear. I consider a porn star a career woman. He goes on to imply that porn stars do not respect themselves and are selling their bodies for sexual exploitation. While the later half of this statement is true, the first seems to me to depend on the woman. Would Giuliani make the same claims of women who posed nude for the great artists of the Renaissance?

As Talking Points Memo reports, Giuliani refused to backtrack on his comments in an interview with MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson. “Why would I withdraw them?” he said. “You’re going to tell me that being involved in pornography isn’t demeaning to women? I don’t know — do you have a daughter?”

So he is sticking to his opinion, and trying to get Jackson to see his point of view. Seems reasonable.

Daniels, who has said she had a sexual encounter with Trump in 2006, is currently embroiled in a contentious lawsuit against the president, as she seeks to void a nondisclosure agreement she signed about the purported interaction. Trump attorney Michael Cohen admitted to paying Daniels $130,000 shortly before the 2016 election — an amount that Trump later acknowledged reimbursing him for.

Personally, I’d say breaching her contract with Cohen does more to make me disrespect Daniels than her being a porn star. As to whether Trump had an affair with her or not, I don’t care. Everyone should be free to choose to do what they want, as long as they aren’t hurting others. No one is entitled to my respect: respect is earned.

Whether or not Mr Giuliani respects Stormy Daniels is irrelevant. After all Stormy could hardly show respect Mr Giuliani enough to accept his advances if he made no advances to Stormy. For what it is worth, I would have thought that someone who is on offer for sex can only have sex, immoral or otherwise if someone else accepts the offer. If a sexual act then transpires surely both are equally either at fault or, less probably, to be respected. Conversely it therefore follows if one has chosen to be a partner they can hardly turn around later and imply the other partner should shoulder the blame. To me the only strange aspect to this affair is that any female not already married to the said Donald should accept his attentions. As a former Miss Universe contestant told a friend a few months back, the man is creepy. I would have thought his reputation alone would have been enough to make any thinking woman avoid the possibility.

I also couldn’t give a hoot about whether Guiliani respects Daniels or about whether Trump slept with her. Presumably the continuous coverage of the story is an attempt to erode his support from the Christian right. This won’t work unless the Democrats put forward a candidate who appears more virtuous to Christians. Daniels has no credible chance of being respected by most Christians.
