What Does Jesus Say About Himself?

jesus-christWhat Jesus actually said about himself, we can never be certain. The gospels, the earliest of which, the Gospel of Mark, was likely written about 35 years after the crucifixion, offer the most reliable testimony we have. Searching the KJV for the phrases “messias”, “son of man”, and “son of god”, we can get a pretty clear idea. From earliest to latest:

  • In Mark, Jesus calls himself the “Son of man” 9 times, and admits the he is the “Son of the Blessed” once.
  • In Matthew, Jesus calls himself the “Son of man” 18 times, and the “Son” once.
  • In Luke, Jesus calls himself the “Son of man” 12 times, and the “Son” once.
  • In John, Jesus call himself the “Son of man” 9 times, and the “Son of God” 3 times.

From this, it seems clear that the idea that Jesus claimed to be the Son of God came later in the Christian tradition, and according to the earliest gospel, Mark, he never did, but merely agreed that he was when asked by the priests of the Sanhedrin, a claim which was later watered down in Matthew and Luke.

3 Responses to What Does Jesus Say About Himself?

  1. From all what Jesus says about himself and his heavenly Father Christians should clearly come to know and understand that Jesus is the sent one from god, the promised Messiah, who is a son of man and son of God, a man of flesh, bones and blood, and no spirit like the Only One True God, the God of Abraham , Who is also the God of Jesus and his disciples and Whom should also be our God and not Christ.

It is incomprehensible that still so many christians want to keep on to human and church doctrines instead of accepting the Biblical teaching that Jesus is the son of God and not a god son.

    • jimbelton says:

I don’t claim to know whether Jesus was the Christ or not. To me, that is a matter of belief (or faith, if you prefer). I believe that all scripture is written by fallible men, and therefore we must examine it critically in the light of our knowledge and experience to determine what truths it reveals. A fundamentalist blindly follows. As Jesus said, when you follow a blind man, you will end up in a ditch. A naturalist blindly ignores the possibility of anything that can’t be explained what we already know. As the proverb says, pride comes before a fall.
