Agents of Change

agents-of-change“You must be the change you wish to see in the world”
– Mahatma Gandhi

When Jesus sent his 12 apostles on their missions, he knew his message was a threat to the status quo, and warned them of the dangers they would face:

I send you forth like sheep into the midst of wolves. Therefore, be as wise as serpents, and as harmless as doves. Beware, for men will deliver you up to their councils, and scourge you in their synagogues. You shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for speaking against them.

When they deliver you up, don’t worry how or of what you will speak, for what to say will be given to you in the hour that you speak. For it is not you that speak, but the holy Spirit that speaks in you.

Brother shall deliver up brother to death, and the father the child. Children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death. You shall be hated by all men for my sake. But he that endures to the end shall be saved.

He then made one of several statements that show that he expected that the establishment of the kingdom of heaven on earth would occur within the lifetime of his disciples:

When they persecute you in one city, flee to another. I tell you truly, you shall not go through all the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
