Goodbye, Unity, Hello Classic Gnome

After installing Ubuntu 13.10, replacing the Windows 8 that came preinstalled on my new Gateway laptop, it was time to ditch Unity and get a decent desktop up and running. First step was to install Gnome. After logging out, I was able to select Gnome or Gnome Classic. Gnome worked, but Gnome Classic didn’t.

To make Gnome work the way I like, I installed Compiz Settings Manager and Tweak Tool. With Tweak Tool, I was able to add the Panel (the row of open windows on the bottom of the screen), the application menu, the places menu, and the minimize and maximize buttons back.
